Omega-3s fatty acids and their benefits for your health

Consumption of Omega-3 has been trending for a long time and even everyday we see new Omega-3 supplements. But, what is Omega-3?

We will break down everything you need to know about Omega-3’s. And yes, we know we are a fish market but we care about the health of our clientele and we always share tips and recipes so they can enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

What are Omega-3s?

Omega-3 are PolyUnsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA) and they help you absorb certain vitamins and provide essential nutrients that your body needs to function.

Polyunsaturated fats are considered healthy fats and they may reduce heart related diseases. Polyunsaturated fats are usually liquid at room temperature and are referred to as “oils”. We can find them mostly in fatty fish, plant-based oils, seeds and nuts.

Omega-3’s are an essential component of your diet since they help brain function and cell growth, so you must add them in your diet. Some studies have shown that it may help and prevent mental decline and related diseases. Also, it lowers the risk of Alzheimer disease which is the most common cause of dementia among older adults.

Another study found that the risk of dementia was lowered by 60% in just 2 years. Dementia is the loss of brain function that impairs a person’s ability to think, remember or reason.

Omega-3’s are known for their benefits to heart health. Several studies show that fish consumption helps decrease the risk of dying from heart disease. There’s some evidence that they help lower levels of triglycerides, which is a type of fat that when levels go high increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.

It’s also recommended that pregnant or breastfeeding women consume between 200 and 350 grams of fish low in mercury at least twice per week. This is because some studies have shown that omega-3’s may improve infant development.

As with any other thing, moderation is the key. The overconsumption of omega-3’s can lead to an increase in your calories since all fats contain 9 calories per gram. This is twice the calories found in carbs and protein.

We do recommend checking with a health expert if you want to know even more about this and more factors that may have a big impact in your life.
